Telford & Wrekin Council plans to add machines for adults to exercise arm and leg muscles.

Outdoor gyms are already very common in warmer countries, and have become increasingly important in Britain over recent years.

Newport councillor Tim Nelson, a keen cyclist and fitness fan, said he welcomed the investment.

He said: "Victoria Park seems like the ideal location because it's right next to the new gym.

"People have often said that they want to see things for people beyond youngsters.

"I am in favour of anything that increases participation in leisure, sport and exercise.

"In recent years money has been spent on the swimming pool, the cycle path and the skate park, so that is all good."

Derek Owen, parks and open space officer for Telford & Wrekin Council, said it would encourage people to engage in physical activity.

He said: "The project is to add to the existing range of play and recreation activities within the park to meet the needs of this community and increase the opportunity for local people to exercise in the area.

"Increasing the participation of people in enjoyable physical activities is essential for physical and mental well-being. We believe this currently under used area of the park can be transformed to maximise its usage and value to the local community."
