Shropshire Council planners are recommending the scheme between Mousecroft Lane and Longden Road, close to the Nuffield Hospital, is given the go-ahead by councillors when they discuss the scheme at a meeting on January 9.

But concerns have been raised the scheme could cause a dangerous build-up of traffic in an already congested area of town.

If the outline planning application by Wyro Developments is approved, developers will have to contribute more than £1 million worth of funding to the council, with money earmarked for spending on areas such as improving the local road network.

Objections to the proposals have been submitted to the council by the Campaign to Protect Rural England, Shrewsbury Town Council and the Meole Village Residents Association, with many of the concerns centred around existing traffic problems being exacerbated by the new development. In her objection letter, Susan Luther, from the residents association, said the area is "already very congested".

But the report by Shropshire Council case officer Andrew Gittins going to members of the central planning committee, who will decide on the scheme, said the council's highways team have not objected to the proposal.

The highway report said congestion levels on Longden Road during school opening and closing hours are currently "satisfactory".
