Care home for adults could create 20 jobs in Market Drayton
A new specialist care home for adults with learning difficulties could be built in a town in Shropshire – creating up to 20 jobs.
The home has been earmarked for the site of a former builder's yard and garage in Adderley Road in Market Drayton, and if built would provide 24-hour, one-to-one care for up to eight people needing specialist support who currently live outside the county.
People with challenging behaviour or physical disabilities could also be offered support at the home and a supported living bungalow, flats and training unit are also planned to enable people to live as independently as possible.
Officials at Shropshire Council have submitted a planning application to build the home after funding was secured in principle for the development. The plans form part of the council's Market Drayton Repatriation Project, which aims to bring vulnerable people currently living outside Shropshire back to their home county to receive the support they need.
The cost of the development has not been made public and there is no timescale for when building work will start. But the news has been welcomed by town mayor Councillor Tim Beckett.
He said: "Anything that creates jobs is good. The less derelict spaces we have in the town the better."
A statement on behalf of Shropshire Council said: "A paper was presented to cabinet on July 24 explaining the development, which will enable eight adults who have learning disabilities to be repatriated back into their home county.
"The proposals were subsequently approved and funding for the development has been secured in principle.
"The council will remain owners and in overall control of the site, but there may be several different external care providers running the services."
People can comment on the plans as part of the consultation over the development, via the Shropshire Council website.
