Plans to get Shrewsbury on the motorway network will be raised in the House of Commons, Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski has said.

The MP said he will be asking Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin to look at reclassifying a stretch of the A5 up to Shrewsbury as a matter of priority.

Mr Kawczynski said he will also ask for a Commons debate on the issue.

The MP and Mayor of Shrewsbury Councillor Jon Tandy made the call to upgrade the road to help promote the town as a place with good transport links for businesses thinking of relocating.

They say big investors are currently put off from expanding into Shrewsbury and creating jobs as towns such as Telford appear to have better transport links.

Mr Kawczynski said: "I have been informed there are no plans at present to upgrade parts of the A5 around Shrewsbury to motorway status but will continue to lobby the transport minister as I consider that it is important."
