One of Shrewsbury's largest charity shops is to close next month after opting not to renew its lease.

The British Heart Foundation store in the Darwin Shopping Centre, which sells furniture and electrical items, occupies a large space on the lower level and is due to close on December 7.

Charity bosses said the shop would close because it was not providing them with an "acceptable level of profit".

Diane Locke, deputy retail director at the BHF, confirmed the closure. She said: "We have a duty to continually monitor the trading performance of each shop to ensure we are securing a good return on investment - which enables us to continue our life-saving work into the fight for every heartbeat.

"When a shop lease comes up for renewal we make an assessment based on the shop's performance. If a shop is not providing the charity with an acceptable level of profit we do not commit to another period of the lease."

Kevin Lockwood, manager of the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres, said: "Naturally we are disappointed that they have decided not to renew their lease which expires in December as we have done our best to keep them.

"But we have been encouraged by the number of new arrivals in recent months, with the opening of The Entertainer, Vapes and Golden Guitars and top fashion store Blue Inc opening this month."
