500-homes bid near Royal Shrewsbury Hospital wins backing of councillors
Councillors have backed plans to build more than 500 new homes close to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in the next few years.
Members of Shropshire Council's planning committee gave the green light to two linked housing development proposals at a meeting in Shirehall yesterday.
Properties are to be built west of Hanwood Road in Radbrook, stretching up to the bottom of Mytton Oak Road, close to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Barratt Homes was given the go-ahead for the first phase of the project, which will involve the construction of 118 properties to the west of Hanwood Road in Radbrook.
Developers said in August that the scheme will create 200 construction jobs.
Outline planning permission was also granted for the larger Mytton Oak Road scheme. This allows for the eventual creation of up to 425 new houses and the building of a countryside park.
Both proposals are linked to council ambitions to allow the building of 550 homes in the Bowbrook and Radbrook area over the next few years.
Shropshire Council is aiming to build 6,500 houses in Shrewsbury between 2006 and 2026. While about 2,500 have been built or given planning permission between April 2006 and March 2013, 4,000 properties are still required to meet the target.
Councillor Andrew Bannerman raised concerns about whether there would be enough facilities to serve the hundreds of new residents at the two sites.
But Councillor Peter Nutting said the issue had been taken into consideration, with several acres of land due to be given to Shropshire Council.
"There is enough land to build a school, sports facilities and play facilities for everybody on this site," he said.
Councillors at yesterday's meeting also voted to defer a decision on residential accommodation made up of 21 retirement apartments on land next to The Beacon pub on Copthorne Road.
They asked officers to negotiate with developers on car parking and road access arrangements before making a decision.
