A phone book belonging to Adolf Hitler has failed to sell at auction in Shropshire, despite being expected to fetch £5,000.

Hitler's personal copy of the directory for Munich, which lists him as a "writer", attracted no bids when it went under the hammer at Ludlow Racecourse this week.

The book included an original receipt dated December 19, 1931.

Hitler also signed the copy, which includes a loosely inserted printed circular letter addressed to him.

Hitler is listed on page 413 as "schriftsteller" – or writer – following the publication of his book Mein Kampf, meaning My Struggle.

The directory was up for sale on Wednesday in an auction by Richard Westwood-Brookes in association with Mullock's of Ludlow.

Mr Westwood-Brookes said the lot's owner, a German book dealer, may instruct him to put it in his next auction in November.

"There's a good chance we will be putting it on again, we will just have to see," he said. "The fact that something doesn't sell doesn't make it unsaleable.

"It just means it happened on the day there weren't the people there who may have wanted it or could afford it.
