The man, described as being in his 30s and of slim build, demanded cash from the worker at the Britannia bank on Newport's High Street and ordered them to place money into a carrier bag – before nonchalantly walking out.

Firearms officers launched an immediate search but were unable to find him. Police believe he was holding a handgun and have appealed for witnesses.

The community has been left in a state of shock following the robbery, which took place shortly before 11.30am on Saturday.

DI Pete Brophy of West Mercia Police said: "Staff and customers were understandably left extremely shaken."

The man has been described as white and either balding or with closely cropped hair. He was wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and white trainers and dark, wraparound sunglasses.
