£4.7m primary school to cope with influx of pupils in Lawley
A £4.7 million primary school is set to be built in Lawley, to deal with the influx of children to 3,300 new homes.
The academy, which will be out of authority control, is expected to be given the green light by Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet on Monday.
The surge in demand for primary school places has followed the growth of the Ironstone community development. The nearby Lawley Primary and Newdale Primary schools have been extended, but as more homes go up another site will be needed.
The school is likely to start with 210 pupils and grow to 420. Developers of the Ironstone site have agreed to pay £3.6 million towards the cost.
Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: "This is yet another example of how Telford & Wrekin Council is working co-operatively with developers to improve the infrastructure and facilities in the borough.
"Ironstone has been a fantastic development which has rejuvenated that part of Telford and created a new community."
He added: "We said at our Invest In Telford launch this week that Telford is the fastest growing town in the Midlands and it is developments like the one at Lawley which demonstrate how true that is."
In Lawley today parents welcomed the new school, although concerns were raised about more development in the area.
