Local charities and organisations in Shrewsbury are on course to benefit from the thousands of pounds raised at this year's carnival.

While the full amount collected is yet to be counted, organisers are hoping they will have either matched or beaten the £10,000 raised last year.

Charities and good causes in the town have until July 31 to be nominated for a slice of the funding, which is to be handed out by the carnival's organising committee.

Carnival secretary Shelley Oliver said that the funds will now be counted before a decisions is made on who will get the cash.

"We will know in the next few weeks the total amount raised and anyone who wishes to nominate a charity or good cause has until July 31st to submit an application."

She also thanked volunteers for all their help in making Saturday's event a success.

"The carnival could not go ahead without everyone's help and its success is thanks to so many people. We start planning next year's event in September and the first decision will be the theme so watch this space," she said.

Mrs Oliver said she had been thrilled with the large turnout on the streets of Shrewsbury and in the Quarry as large crowds shrugged off the wet weather which arrived just before the start of the parade.

"The day went fantastically well. The turnout was amazing and for the most part the weather was good, which always helps."

Chairman Graham Meredith said: "The team behind Shrewsbury Carnival has worked hard to put on a fantastic event this year, and I thank the many local businesses that have supported us.

"A huge thank you must also be given to local hauliers who allow their vehicles to be used in the parade and the drivers for giving up their time."

Ten-year-old Cameron Diggory Groves was this year's Carnival Crier and helped to lead the procession with Town Crier Martin Wood.
