Relatives of 21-year-old Danny Jones, from Chirk, said they were devastated to discover the tributes had been removed without their permission.

The trainee accountant was stabbed during an incident in Lord Street on April 24 and later died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Within hours flowers, cards and letters were left at the Lord Street entrance to Oak Street car park. But when a family member went to lay flowers on Monday, she said all the bouquets had gone.

A spokesman said Danny's family and friends were distraught. "We haven't laid Danny to rest yet and yet someone has done this. Everyone is horrified. What is really upsetting is all the cards and messages have also gone. They have been taken down before we had a chance to collect and keep them."

West Mercia Police spokeswoman Sarah Buxton said: "The flowers were removed – believed to be by local residents." Officials from Shropshire Council and Oswestry Town Council said none of their staff had been instructed to remove the tributes.

Richard Adam Reece, 18, of Lord Street, Oswestry, has been charged with the murder of Mr Jones. He appeared at Stafford Crown Court and was remanded in custody.
