Parking fiasco puts Ludlow Market in jeopardy

Two stallholders have quit a 900-year-old market in Shropshire and more will follow because of council restrictions on where they can park, traders claimed today.

Traders at Ludlow Market are angry over changes to the permit system being trialled this month and say the future of the market could be under threat.

They used to be able to park in Mill Street or Dinham, just a minute's walk from the market, for £1 a day.

But Shropshire Council chiefs have now limited the number of on-street parking spaces to just a handful outside the Guildhall – and quadrupled the price to £4 to park there or on Castle Square car park.

Traders are now parking their cars on The Linney, which is free but a 15-minute walk away, but they are worried about losing business as they walk to and from their cars – but also about the possibility of thieves striking while they are away.
