Work on the mini-ramp will start in the spring 2013, taking around five weeks to complete.

Shropshire Council officials say the new ramp will be a replacement for the previous skatepark at Monkmoor Recreation Centre, which was closed over safety concerns.

The new skate ramp has been designed by specialist skate park builders Four One Four.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council's cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said the decision was made following a public consultation earlier this year to find a preferred location for the facility.

"We are really pleased with the design and are confident that this is what young people and skaters want, and just as importantly where they want it," he said.

"This was achieved by involving them at the very start, and will ensure that they use it. Four One Four is an excellent company, which has a lot of experience in building concrete skateparks.

"It also is keen to continue to work with young people to help them shape the design further."

Karen Burgoyne, local Shropshire Councillor for Sundorne, added: "It was really good to see those young people who will be actually using the skate ramp get directly involved in the project, from participating in discussions on location and design based on the funds available, to proactively obtaining quotes.

"I look forward to seeing them enjoying the facility in the very near future."

Money to build the new skate park will come from the Leisure Facilities Strategy capital programme, funded from Shropshire Council's corporate resources.
