Shifnal Town Council has been awarded £10,000 under the Awards for All scheme. The money will go towards improving and renovating Curriers Lane Park in the town.

The council is matching the grant, making a total of £20,000 to be spent on new equipment at the playground and safety matting.

Shifnal mayor, Councillor Eileen Briscoe, said: "I am delighted that we have been able to obtain this grant. It is an early Christmas present for the children of Shifnal. It will really revamp that park very nicely."

A spokesman for the council said that work on the project was due to start in December. New equipment will include a climbing frame after local youngsters were consulted on what equipment they wanted.

Project officer, Mac Sandal, said: "We asked the Parents Teachers & Friends Association plus Shifnal Primary School, who conducted a survey among 40 pupils."

Play leaders at Barn Owls Pre School, Curriers Lane, also had some input into the scheme as did teachers from Hopscotch Nursery and Out-of-School Club, in Curriers Lane. The Big Lottery Fund is the largest distributor of National Lottery good cause funding in the UK.

A council spokesman said the fund aims to let others make real improvements to local communities.
