Shropshire floods hit motorists as rain batters county
Motorists had to be rescued from their cars and railway lines were closed as torrential rain caused flash flooding across the region.
Firefighters were called to help two people to safety from a car which got stuck in flood water on the A442 between Quatt and Alveley, near Bridgnorth, shortly after 1am today.
Crews were then called to a report of another vehicle trapped in a flood just half-an-hour later in Newport Road, Albrighton, although the occupants had managed to free themselves.
On the railways, flooding between Shrewsbury and Wrexham General stations forced the closure of all lines this morning.
A total of 72 flood alerts are currently in place across the Midlands. In Shropshire, they cover the whole of the River Severn through the county, the lower Teme both downstream and upstream of Ludlow and the River Worfe around Cosford.
The Met Office said 1 to 1.2 inches of rain fell in the county in the 24 hours up until 8am today, but Shropshire was in for a brief respite, with sunny spells until dusk today when heavy downpours are predicted which will last for a few hours.
Monday is set to still be unsettled, with outbreaks of rain and winds of up to 35 mph.
