The search was launched by police last night after the man plunged into the river at about 4pm.

It was abandoned when it got too dark but it resumed this morning.

Fire crews launched a rescue boat at Coalport at about 11am.

Chris Ammonds, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "It appears a body has been located in the river just before 12.45pm.

"At around 4.10pm yesterday we received a call saying some had jumped off the bridge.

"The witness said it happened at the main Iron Bridge in the gorge by the museum.

"It is believed the man is in his late 40s early 50s, was in the river and heading in the direction of Coalport on his back.

"It was said that he was moving very quickly in the water.

"The fire service boat was called in and headed towards Jackfield during its search."

Dozens of police were involved in a two-hour operation yesterday which also involved the fire service rescue boat and police helicopter.
