Telford Olympian Kelly Edwards enjoys dinner date with Usain Bolt

Shropshire Olympian Kelly Edwards has revealed her golden memory of London 2012 – sharing a McDonald's with legend Usain Bolt.

The Telford judoka was returning to the athletes village at the same time as Jamaican ace Bolt after he had sealed a historic sprint double by winning the 200m earlier that evening.

Bolt was joined by his compatriot Yohan Blake who finished second behind his training partner in both the 100m and 200m.

And 21-year-old Kelly admitted the chance meeting was a moment to savour.

"I had dinner with Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt at McDonald's after they won medals in the 200m," said the former Thomas Telford School pupil.

"That night I went to go and watch the women's football final at Wembley and we got in quite late.

"They were coming back from competition at 12.30am. We ended up going to the food hall together. We didn't talk about performance or anything like that – we just chilled out.

"You see them on television and you think these people are legends and heroes, which they are.

"But you talk to them and they are just humans the same as you. I was with them about half an hour but it seemed a lot longer."

Kelly, who now lives in Dartford where the British Judo Performance Institute is based, revealed the intriguing insight into life in the athletes village on her first return to Shropshire since the Olympics.

She was one of three Shropshire judokas – along with Gemma Howell and Danny Williams – to represent Team GB at the Games.

And Bolt and Blake weren't the only sporting megastars she rubbed shoulders with. "There were so many – Jessica Ennis, Serena Williams, Mo Farrah," she added.

"Mo was a brilliant guy. I only had 10 minutes with him because when people had won medals they were rushing all over the shop.

"I saw him at 8am on the day after he won the second gold and he had already done one interview and on to the next.

"To meet people like that was an amazing experience."

Kelly was beaten by Japan's Tomoko Fukumi in the first round of the Under-48kgs category on the first full day of competition.
