A 19-year-old woman fought off a man who grabbed her arm and tried to drag her into an alleyway in Shropshire as she walked home after a night out, police said today.

Officers say they are treating the incident in an alleyway opposite Asda in Stafford Street, Market Drayton, as a sexual assault.

Police said the teenager was left 'frightened and distressed' following her ordeal.

They are now appealing for witnesses in a bid to trace the offender.

The man struck some time between 11.15pm and 11.45pm on Saturday after the woman left the Crown pub.

Police said the man, who approached the woman, also made indecent comments.

The victim, who was not injured, managed to break away before going home and alerting the police.

Sergeant Tony Merrick, for West Mercia Police, said today: "The woman was extremely upset and we are anxious to trace the man responsible.

"He is described as white, in his late 20s, of medium build, about 6ft tall with short brown hair.

"He was wearing a white short-sleeved T-shirt, blue denim jeans and a silver neck chain," he added.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to contact police in Market Drayton on 101.
