Plans for Ludlow's £27 million new hospital could finally be approved next week when they go before the final groups of health bosses.

The Shropshire County Primary Care Trust will discuss the proposal at an extraordinary board meeting on Tuesday.

They will weigh the business case for building the hospital at the Ludlow Eco Park, on the outskirts of the town. If they approve, the case will go before the Strategic Health Authority on Thursday for the final decision.

Work could then begin in the summer, with an opening date of 2014 being expected.

The plans include two GP surgeries, an eight place medical day centre for renal dialysis and chemotherapy, an imaging suite for X rays, and expanded out patient facilities.

Shropshire's Community Health NHS Trust gave its support earlier this week.

Joanna Newton, chairman of the West Mercia Cluster of primary care trusts, said today: "I would like to commend the community trust for their hard work in pulling together this detailed business case."

She added: "I would like to reassure local residents that we will review the business case carefully and will not make any decision lightly. We also recognise that even if the full business case gets approval from the PCT and Strategic Health Authority, this will not be the end of our work."
