A dog has died in Newport after being strangled by its collar in a 'freak accident' with another dog.
Firefighters were called to St Mary Street at about midnight after two dogs became tangled while playing outside.
Their owner heard the animals in distress and went outside to investigate.
Watch manager Adam Matthews, from Newport Fire Station, said one dog had managed to get its paw inside the collar of the other dog.
The dogs panicked, causing the collar to tighten up on the paw and around the dog's neck.
The animal died at the scene. Firefighters had to use bolt croppers to free the other animal, which suffered injuries to its paw.
Mr Matthews said: "A vet did attend and assisted us by helping to calm the dog."
He said they waited for the vet to arrive before approaching and then used bolt cutters to cut the collar from around the neck of the deceased dog.
