A £50,000 grant has been secured towards the cost of vital repairs to stop Ludlow's Castle Weir from crumbling into the River Teme.

The cash has been handed over to members of Dinham Millennium Green Trust (DMGT), which owns the weir, by Shropshire Council from the authority's Market Towns Revitalisation Fund.

It is now hoped the £250,000 needed for the essential work on the weir at Dinham will be raised by the end of the year with repairs due to be carried out during 2013.

Paul Nicholls, chairman of DMGT, said it was the first major grant secured for the work.

"We have a long way to go but this first generous grant will give us heart and set the ball rolling," he added.
