Commuters in south Shropshire faced long delays early today after a train broke down in Ludlow.

Arriva Trains Wales said passengers using the line between Hereford and Shrewsbury were delayed by up to 50 minutes before the train was eventually recovered at about 9am.

The affected passenger train was an early morning service from Cardiff. It was repaired on the track after Arriva scrambled an engineer to the scene.

Lewis Brencher, spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales, said: "The train affected was an early starter from Cardiff so the numbers of passengers on the train was not likely to be many.

"An engineer managed to repair the fault and we moved the train that way.

"Some residual delays remained while the train was moving."

He said that a normal service resumed at about 11am.
