When Shropshire chef Mat Poulton was struggling to attract enough diners to his restaurant to make ends meet he turned to a television expert for help.

The 29-year-old chef's restaurant Bambers in Bridgnorth is the subject of the latest episode of new Channel 5 show, The Restaurant Inspector.

Fernando Peire, the director of world famous London restaurant, The Ivy, is the inspector who sets out to turn around the fortunes of restaurants, including Bambers.

The cameras began rolling at the St Mary's Street restaurant last year for the programme, which airs on Monday at 9pm.

Today Mr Poulton said he would not do it again, despite being glad to have had the experience. He said he did not feel it had had any affect on increasing the number of diners.

Mr Poulton, who reopened Bambers 14 months ago, said: "We opened in the middle of a recession and we were finding it quite tough as we were struggling to get people in through the door. We were retaining customers but getting them through the door was a problem."

The expert praised the quality of food but felt the restaurant needed to improve customer service and for Mr Poulton to spend less time in the kitchen.

Mr Poulton said: "I suppose most of the stuff he said made sense. But I also felt he had got a very London attitude."

But the chef changed the menu to emphasise the local produce and took on a new front of house team.
