The inquests of a Shropshire schoolgirl and her father who died in a house fire were opened today.

Kay-Leigh Cooke, six, and her father Andrew Lineton, 33, died in the fire at a house in Briarwood, Brookside, Telford, on Sunday night.

Police forced the door after receiving a concern for welfare call. The bodies were found inside the property.

There had been a fire over the weekend which burned itself out and filled the property with toxic smoke. Police said the fire was not started deliberately. Fire chiefs said it was a tragic accident. Mr John Ellery, coroner for Telford, opened and adjourned the inquests today.

Kay-Leigh, who lived with her mother in Woodside, was staying for the weekend with her father, a forklift driver at Fruit of the Loom.

William Reynolds Infants School in Woodside is to hold a special assembly in Kay-Leigh's memory on Friday.

Denise Wakefield, spokeswoman for Telford police, said: "Initial indications are that smoke was a significant factor in the cause of death.

"At this time it is not being treated as suspicious."
