The gang fled at high speed up Tan Bank.
Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Steve Tonks, leading inquiries, said: "Following the collision, three or four men dressed in dark clothing with their faces covered jumped out of the VW Golf carrying baseball bats and metal bars.
"They approached the victim's vehicle, forced open the door and then attacked him."
