Top detectives have been drafted in to set up a major investigation unit in Telford to catch a gang who left a man seriously hurt following a street attack.
The 29-year-old was found with multiple injuries on the pavement in Urban Gardens, Wellington, yesterday morning. He was "extremely poorly" in hospital today.
It is understood he was smoking in his car shortly before 4am when a gang of three men smashed the car windows and dragged him out before beating him.
The unit (MIU) was set up at Telford's Malinsgate police station yesterday and includes specialist detectives from across West Mercia Police.
Detective Chief Inspector Lee Davenport has been brought in to lead the inquiry.
He said: "This evidence available includes possible CCTV footage as well as the results of our inquiries in the local area and this work will continue today as we attempt to identify the individuals responsible for this assault.
"At the present time the 29-year-old victim remains under observation in hospital, with his head injuries being carefully monitored.
"Although he remains extremely poorly, his condition is described by medical staff as being stable."
Mr Davenport appealed for anyone with information to come forward as a matter of urgency and call police on 0300 333 3000.
He said there would be a high profile policing presence in the area for the next few days to provide reassurance to the local community.
The street was sealed off for several hours yesterday as forensic investigations took place. The victim's car was taken for forensic tests.
