More than 160 children were hoping the rain would hold off this afternoon as they dashed through the streets of Wellington during a historic race.
More than 160 children were hoping the rain would hold off this afternoon as they dashed through the streets of Wellington during a historic race.
The first race of the 13th Bayley Mile started at 1pm with dozens of girls aged under 11 from schools across the borough taking part. Five races were held throughout the afternoon.
About 20 volunteer stewards were marshalling the course. The starters, time keepers, judges and recorders were from Wrekin College – the race is named after Sir John Bayley, the founder of Wrekin College.
Brian Smith, who helped revive the event when he was a town councillor 13 years ago, was due to be presented with an award for his long service to the event after the final race.
Shortly before the start, Well-ington town councillor Dorothy Roberts said: "We hope the wea-ther will stay fine," adding: "We have got these hordes of children here who are very excited."
