An historic telephone box in Bridgnorth is to be saved from the axe and preserved for future generations. The old-style red box, in Oldbury Road, has been "adopted" by Bridgnorth Town Council for the bargain price of £1.
Town councillors last night voted to save the box as it is a useful signpost for people visiting the area.
As well as paying the nominal £1, the town council will maintain the kiosk in future years. People will not be able to make calls from the box and the phone and all mechanisms will be removed.
The council has followed the lead of Church Stretton Town Council which last week adopted a box in All Stretton.
BT is allowing local councils to adopt the boxes in a bid to save them from disappearing from the British countryside.
There are 82 red boxes across the county and BT has said it will not remove any until October 1.
Councillor Beryl Pay said: "Oldbury is like a rabbit warren with no names on many of the lanes and the phone box is a useful signpost."
