Clive invited to reception

A Bridgnorth man has been officially recognised for his efforts in the summer's flooding clean-up operation.

Clive Gwilt, 49, joined others from around the country at a Government reception at Lancaster House in London, hosted by Floods Recovery Minister John Healey.

The Bridgnorth District Council revenues inspector was a key figure in protecting many homes against damage.

He became the council's "outside inspector" during June's floods - the authority's first link with the people affected.

Bridgnorth born Mr Gwilt, of Bramble Ridge, was put forward for the honour by council chiefs, who said his knowledge of the area was invaluable.

More than 300 people from flood-hit communities were at yesterday's reception. They were nominated for "showing courage, ingenuity and community spirit during and in the aftermath of this summer's floods.

Andrea McWilliams, for the district council, said: "Clive's day job is revenues inspector but when we have any kind of emergency incident in our area he becomes our "eyes and ears" and under our emergency planning procedures his role is entitled outside inspector.

"He establishes contact with those people affected by the incident and arranges for specialist advice or help.

"Clive's local knowledge is invaluable to the council's response to incidents and his willingness to respond when necessary definitely helps us to effectively respond to the needs of the community."
