Traveller evictions and closures

I just hope that Ashford Carbonell School is not on the council list for closure, due to falling rolls. South Shropshire planners just put the last nail in the school's coffin by evicting traveller families from The Oakery.

I just hope that Ashford Carbonell School is not on the council list for closure, due to falling rolls.

South Shropshire planners just put the last nail in the school's coffin - if it is on the list - by evicting traveller families from The Oakery, whose children were attending Ashford Carbonell.

Of course that man who rang me up said: "Parish councils in South Shropshire would sooner schools closed than one traveller child was enrolled there," will be rubbing his hands in glee.

But what about parents who don't share his view and whose children may now have to be bussed to Ludlow everyday?

In the past, small village schools in South Shropshire were saved from the axe when gypsy children were enrolled.

This could happen again if people were willing to support a traveller site locally, instead of moaning about it all the time.

Both travellers and the housed people of rural areas, could co-operate to save their communities from cut backs.
