As with the wretched "low energy" bulbs - which need three to replace one filament bulb in order not to get eyestrain, and require extra fuel to be burned in order to make up for heat formally generated by the old iridescent lamps; resulting in more, not less, energy being consumed - yet another of the Government's quick fix schemes bites the dust.

I refer to free bus passes for all pensioners, put in place before there is an adequate fleet of busses to cater for them.

Similarly, the multi-million Jamie Oliver "healthy eating" school meals that kids refuse to eat, are being quietly dropped, because 40 per cent of children are found to be malnourished and short of essential fats needed to promote growth.

All the Government schemes have been introduced because of some trendy eco-zealot who has managed to grab the attention of ministers, who have no idea of how the real world lives.

Most of the green issues are simply scams introduced by consultants, jobsworths and self-appointed "experts" on huge retainers.

They won't save the world! Common sense and study of geology and history may help.
