Today I was observing the 13th fast of the month of Ramadan, the Holy Muslim month. A Christian preacher knocked on my door in the morning.

I explained to her about the institution of fasting and that fasting was also observed by the great other religions of the world - Jews, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists.

The preacher was surprised when I told her that Jesus Christ and his disciples also observed a fast. She was further surprised when I told her that the Holy Quran, the sacred Book of Muslims, described the holiness of Mary, the news of the birth of a son and a full chapter on the prophethood of Jesus Christ.

It was news to her when I mentioned that I have a copy of the Holy Bible in my library.

The duration of the fast is 13 hours, during which no food, fruit, water or any edible item is allowed. No conjugal relations are permitted. Fasting is obligatory for every Muslim.

I hope this information will be beneficial for the inter-faith dialogue.
