Shake-up won't help recycling
I am writing to express how appalled I am with the new waste collection service. It is quite clear that this represents nothing more than a 50 per cent cut in refuse collection.
My garden waste, newspaper, magazines and glass are already collected on a bi-weekly basis. I use the green box and the cardboard service regularly. The change in collection represents nothing new - except the cut in refuse collection.
I understand that rationalising the collection of recycling makes perfect sense (probably mostly in terms of cost to the council) but cutting the refuse collection does not.
I recycle all I can at the moment anyway. This is clearly no more than a cost-cutting exercise, especially when the council is not collecting anything new - what about plastic bottles?
These contribute massively to landfill yet will still not be collected. This is more proof that this new service is not, in reality, an environmental move.
Furthermore, two of the "benefits" listed in the leaflet are: "reduces the amount of waste that has to be landfilled" and "enhances the local environment by ensuring more materials are recycled." Both of these are not true. These things are already collected.
My young family fills my existing green bin, even while recycling all we can.
All that will happen is that I will have refuse sitting around my garden for two weeks. I will have to take bin bags as well as the wheelie bin to the front of my house. Quite where I am to store these extra rubbish-filled bin bags I don't know.
