I read with interest Mr Kerswell's letter (Starmail, August 2.) He offers as evidence that climate change is a myth the fact Ukraine had a record lowest winter temperature last year, and New Zealand had snow when sun was expected.

Considering that much weather data about the Ukraine was destroyed in the Luftwaffe's air attacks on Kiev in 1941/2 and the subsequent German occupation of the city, it's not too surprising that no colder winter temperatures are recorded.

Ukraine enjoys a continental climate that has very hot summers and very cold winters. As for snow in New Zealand, you don't have to go so far afield to find unexpected weather - in 1975 there was a snowstorm in Leicester on June 1.

The Greenland ice-cap is a remnant of the last Ice Age which ended roughly 10,000 years ago.

The greening of small areas of the Greenland coast happened during a period known as the Little Climatic Optimum, which had run its course by the 12th century.

But two items are all Mr Kerswell seems to be able to offer in evidence to support his theory.

He still persists in his assertion that because July in Britain was awful, global warming is something got up by those with an interest in raising taxes, ignoring the facts.

The events on a minute portion of the Earth's surface cannot be taken as conclusive evidence of the absence of global climate change when they are contradicted by greater events elsewhere.
