Cost of EU is one we can bear

That date marked the anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, in which 250,000 British men were killed in 100 days (and probably the same number of Germans).

That wasn't sufficient of course. A generation later we had to have another go. Ignore the Holocaust for a moment; just think how many people were killed in air raids on London, Coventry, Hamburg, Dresden etc.

The gradual development of the EU isn't the only reason why most of us of under bus-pass age have lived our lives in relative peace, security and increasing prosperity.

But even this imperfect organisation has played an important part in creating a Europe where people resolve their conflicts and tensions by negotiation and co-operation, rather than by killing each other in almost unimaginable numbers.

Sounds to me like the EU might be a bargain.
