Fears that this year's Minsterley Show - Shropshire's oldest one-day show - could be a victim of this summer's unseasonal weather have been allayed by organisers.

Bosses of the agricultural show have dismissed rumours the event was being cancelled because of bad weather and issued a "the show will go on" message.

Organisers of the 122nd Oswestry Show have also vowed the event will go on and work on transforming the Parkhall Showground for the show got under way today. Large crowds are expected to come from all over Shropshire, Mid Wales and further afield, to the show tomorrow.

Also being held in Oswestry this weekend is the Volkswagon Extravaganza at the Rednal Airfield. The events runs today until Sunday.

Minsterley show spokeswoman Carol Davies said like organisers of the Royal Welsh Show, they had received a number of inquiries about whether or not the event had been axed. She said: "We are getting a lot of people ringing up saying they have heard the show is off.

"The show is definitely going ahead on August 18. The committee are determined that, as in the foot and mouth year, we will be going ahead.

"The ground is in excellent condition and we have ordered good weather."

The 132nd show, which includes classes for horses, dairy and beef cattle, sheep, goats and poultry, will be held on August 18 on a site in Lea Cross, near Shrewsbury.

This year's main ring attraction will be Big Pete the monster truck - not only does it crush cars but is also able to jump clean over them. It can also pull them in half and much more.

In the evening, there will be dancing in the marquee with a bar from 9.30pm to 12.30am.
