Tony Blair would like to know what councillor William Powell of Powys was on to cause the dangerous outbreak of European Union enthusiasm on these pages recently.

Tony would like to see it identified, mass produced and freely distributed on a national basis.

It must be a powerful concoction if it makes an intelligent adult believe that the European Union has been good for Wales and the Marches, that 70 per cent of our trade is with the European Union and tens of thousands of jobs depend on our membership.

If there was any truth whatever in these three "facts" you would be hearing them from the Prime Minister continuously on TV, radio and in newspaper reports, not from a Powys councillor.

Peace on the continent has nothing to do with the European Union and everything to do with NATO.

You will note that some of our most significant "partners" in Europe have reneged on their NATO mandate in Afghanistan.

Like pro-unionists before him, councillor Powell amends Churchill's September 19 1946 speech in Zurich to suit his own argument.

The speech can easily be found in total online and makes it perfectly clear that Churchill did not infer that Britain should be part of a United States of Europe but was promoting a partnership between France and Germany.

By all means argue your case for membership but let's have facts please.
