A man in his 20s, who has not yet been named, died at the scene of the smash on the A442 Eastern Primary in the Stirchley area.

It happened at about 6.15am yesterday on the southbound stretch.

A Honda Civic left the road, mounted a verge before crashing into the tree. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel were sent to the scene.

The road was closed for about four-and-a-half hours while the vehicle, which was severly damaged, was removed and the crash investigated.

A Telford police spokesman said:"As a result of the accident the male driver of the Honda Civic has sustained fatal injuries."

Firefighters were also sent to the scene after reports the driver was trapped, but they were not needed.
