Pancake racers hit street

Shropshire has gone pancake potty as people across the county celebrate Shrove Tuesday in style.

Schools and business dug out their frying pans in a bid to create Shropshire's tastiest pancake at a series of events.

Youngsters in Market Drayton were getting to grips with the tricky art of pancake tossing. Pupils at the Longlands Primary School breakfast club were taken outside after making their pancakes and given the chance to start flipping their creations.

One of the youngsters, seven-year-old Ben Pugh, was quick to discover things are not always as easy as they look and ended donning one of the pancakes on his head.

The school's breakfast club caters for between 10 and 20 youngsters every day.

Reception class children at Wombridge Primary School, Oakengates, marked Shrove Tuesday with their own pancake race.

Four-year-old Carlos Stewart raced into first place.

In south Shropshire, schools and community groups were enjoying Shrove Tuesday events by making pancakes. A number of shops were also joining in the fun by cooking crepes and raising money for local charities.

Shoppers in Shrewsbury were treated to a traditional pancake day race this morning when teams from businesses on Butcher Row raced along the cobbled street in aid of charity. This year's event raised money for Spectrum Group Shropshire, which helps people with Aspergers syndrome, autism and ADHD.

Youngsters from across the Bridgnorth district were also getting into the pancake day spirit. Pupils at Alveley Primary School were flipping mad at the village hall.
