The blaze at the Avenue Road building started at about 5pm yesterday and was fought by firefighters from Telford, Much Wenlock and Tweedale.

Fire chiefs were today investigating the cause and said it could be arson.

Leading firefighter Lee Guinea said the timber hut - which had asbestos in the roof - was "completely destroyed". Its roof had caved in and only its concrete walls remained standing.

Mr Guinea said crews were there for over two hours. "Everything was involved in the fire and the lot has gone," he said. "We don't know the cause at the moment. We are investigating the possibility it could be arson."

Broseley mayor Sheena Selkirk said the destruction of the building, which was part of the Forester Estate, was a "sad loss".

Councillor Selkirk said: "I'm very sad and dismayed that a building that has been used in the community for so many years has been gutted by fire."

She added: "It was extensively used by the scouts, cubs, guides and brownies and many other groups. Sadly the scouts and cubs groups have now folded and the guides meet elsewhere."
