Time that Blair led by example
Following the recent report on climate change we can all, I presume, expect new or increased "green taxes". Let us hope that there will be a corresponding reduction in taxes elsewhere.
Following the recent report on climate change we can all, I presume, expect new or increased "green taxes". Let us hope that there will be a corresponding reduction in taxes elsewhere. Air travel will probably be included within a revised tax structure.
I am concerned that figures released recently have shown that ministers travelled some 6,500,000 miles, which equates to five times around the world each and every week.
Ministers and others who do not have to pay their own travel expenses will, I expect, unless some other strictures are placed upon them, at best continue to travel as before or at worst increase their journeys.
Modern communication technology has for many years now facilitated telephone and video conference links. President Bush, we are told, has had one or two recently. You will probably argue, rightly, that Government travel is but a very small part of the total, but I would suggest that such a reduction would show intent for action, not just words from the Government.
I would ask Blair therefore to consider setting a target, of say 33 per cent in travel reduction by his Government. In my long life, I have learned that respect can only be achieved by example. It cannot be obtained by diktat. Come on Prime Minister, show us true leadership, by example, and maybe, just maybe, you may gain a little respect.
