Praise for children
On November 2, The Place was the place to be, as young people, their carers and council officers and members joined to celebrate the achievements of many young people in care, from pre-school age to those starting out in the world.
On November 2, The Place was the place to be, as young people, their carers and council officers and members joined to celebrate the achievements of many young people in care, from pre-school age to those starting out in the world.
For the most part, the show was put on and run by the young people. They danced and played music - all their own work.
They spoke of their experiences, achievements in school, school councils, recreation and even being trained to appoint staff who would support them - who would listen rather than impose an adult's will upon them.
These young people, despite the hardships of life they will carry all their lives, have not only done well for themselves but reach out to help others.
These are the ones who deserve front page coverage, along with all our other young people in our borough who not only cause us no concern, but add value to our lives.
Yet, we see front page coverage for the troublemakers and make them stars - few of them feel shame, many feel pride.
Let's give praise where it is due - to our many young people and all who help them to achieve.
They are our future.
