Recent articles in daily newspapers have confirmed what everyone thought - the prime reason for siting "safety" cameras is to generation of cash for Gordon Brown.

Now we learn that this form of legalised highway robbery is not enough and that cameras are to sited at box junctions. If the authorities were really serious about road safety then the following problem should be addressed, very quickly.

It is a fact that this country is being overwhelmed with immigrants and asylum seekers. Many drive cars which while legal in their own countries, are unroadworthy by our standards and often positively dangerous. Many are uninsured and not taxed.

Because the cars have foreign plates they are largely ignored by police and drivers rarely pursued for parking offences and camera speed offences. It is considered too much trouble as the fines are not likely to be paid.

Someone I knew was recently disqualified for drink driving. Within a few weeks he had fraudulently obtained a French driving licence and reregistered his car with French plates.

When I saw this person on the road and informed the police it was me who was made to feel like a criminal. He is still driving illegally.

The system penalises the honest driver while the real threats to road safety are ignored. When you are caught doing 34mph in a built up area or infringing a box junction, think of the thousands of real criminals on the roads who literally can get away with murder.
