Where is evidence of crime?
Harry Vaughan, Letters October 16, describes the inmates of Guantanamo Bay as "hardly innocent civilians". How does he know? As far as I am aware, no evidence of any crime having been committed by these inmates has been published.

If such evidence exists, they should be tried and if found guilty, punished, otherwise they should be released and compensated.
Clearly the presumption of innocence and habeas corpus, the corner stones of the legal system in any free and democratic society, are being disregarded by the United States.
Perhaps Mr Jenkins should also pause for thought as to where this might lead. It has done nothing to moderate Islamic extremism.
