Play area comments recalled

When returning home from holiday, and wading through a pile of Shropshire Stars, I came across a letter submitted by Martin Young, a parish councillor. This letter intrigued me, as it was about Telford's record on providing play areas.

Published

It said Telford & Wrekin Council backed down from providing a play area for south Ketley youngsters, even after residents paid for it.

Is this the same Martin Young who was chairman of Wombridge Primary School governors when Oakengates youths were denied access to the school football pitch, and a deal was done to accommodate Wellington Amateurs FC even after it was agreed with Oakengates town councillors that the pitches would be made available to the Oakengates Rangers football teams?

This caused eruptions with Oakengates residents and town councillors. At a meeting I attended the town councillors, who were also governors of this school, denied knowing that a deal had been signed.

I agree with Martin Young that little or nothing was done for the youth by Telford & Wrekin Council, but one should practise what one preaches. Injustice was done to Oakengates Rangers by the decision to allow Wellington Amateurs to use this football pitch.

I understand Oakengates Rangers can now play football matches on this pitch, but at a price. I am not sure who was responsible for this but I can assure one and all that "truth will out".

I shall endeavour to do all I can to ensure that more is done for young people in Oakengates.

The youth of today are the future of tomorrow.

Cllr John Trafford, Oakengates
