No support for Darwin museum
I cannot believe that Daniel Kawczynski is urging the Government to speed up the transfer of Darwin House to Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council so that a museum can be built (Shropshire Star, October 11).
This comes after an article published last week from the chief executive of Shrewsbury & Atcham Robin Hooper calling on "people power" to urge the Government to hand over the keys.
I ask why? Has Robin Hooper or Daniel Kawczynski asked the taxpayers of Shrewsbury if they want millions of pounds spent on a Darwin museum?
After all, this town doesn't seem to be able to support a museum in the town centre (Rowley House/Clive House) let alone one on the outskirts.
I work at Darwin House and we allow public access - although we have very few visitors.
The building has few original features, we have no Darwin artefacts and nothing left from Darwin days. It would cost the taxpayers of Shrewsbury an enormous amount of money to "create" a museum.
Daniel Kawczynski's article says the delay in the Government acting is costing the people of Shrewsbury millions. I say another "white elephant" of a museum in Shrewsbury would cost us millions.
What happens when the museum fails to attract visitors? The council will sell it off and the town gains yet more luxury apartments and the public loses access to the building forever.
Please consult the people of Shrewsbury before spending another huge amount of money.
