Why is this site to be built on?
When I saw the headline "Work to start on £30 million project" I asked myself the question, why is Oswestry Borough Council holding a referendum about this project when it is clear it intends to go ahead whatever the result?
I must also ask the question, why is it so intent on putting a medical facility on the most contaminated piece of ground in the whole of Oswestry?
There are plenty of far more suitable sites for this project in Oswestry, so it does not make sense to put it on the old railway land.
If the heritage railway is to be realised this land is crucial to its success in the long term and, as the railway is the only realistic chance of making Oswestry a tourist attraction, it is very short-sighted of both Mr Shevlin, chief executive of Oswestry BC and Owen Paterson the local MP to push ahead with these plans.
I am also fed up of seeing the list of new services we will get if it is built when, in fact, nothing new is on offer as they are all services that will be moved from other parts of the borough.
It is time for the council to see sense and look at the long-term good of Oswestry.
B Quigley, Oswestry
