It's crass, insulting even, to compare Guantanamo Bay with Auschwitz, as one correspondent did recently. Auschwitz and other camps like it, were human slaughter houses on an industrial scale. Men, women and children, the young, the old, the infirm.

They were herded into these places to be executed, or literally worked to death. The overall aim was the attempted extermination of an entire race and it gave us the word "genocide".

By comparison, Guantanamo Bay is a prison camp and not a very pleasant or, indeed, sensible facility, but hold on, its inmates are hardly innocent civilians.

Given the opportunity, most would not attempt, or support the attempt, to introduce the world to a religious regime as brutal and fascist as the Nazis. We take liberty and security for granted. Before we let our mouths run away with righteous indignation, we should pause for thought.
