City status benefits uncertain

Well, Telford & Wrekin Council has finally confirmed what us Wrekin people knew all along. So they want to use the name "Telford First" and become a city of 250,000 people, do they?

The "Telford First" bit is quite obvious to the people who live in Newport. The council has made "Telford First" quite clear over the last few years to the detriment of Newport residents.

The city status is something which, whilst suspected, has only recently raised its head. Have they consulted the population one asks, or are they just doing their own thing again?

There are also a lot of people who moved to the area from the West Midlands to get away from big city life.

What advantages would there be in becoming a city?

It will provide higher council taxes, more prestige for city councillors, even higher council taxes, more harebrained schemes, higher council taxes, more regulations, higher pay for the big city executives and even more council tax.

I really cannot think of any positive benefits for the taxpayers. We should therefore be meaningfully consulted before the council takes the proposal further.
