Club hours bid could be rejected
A nightspot in Shrewsbury bidding to open until 3am at weekends is set to have its plans refused over fears of noise and disorder, it emerged today.
Bar Med, in Claremont Bank, has made the application for extended opening. But police say there have been 47 incidents of trouble reported on the street near the bar during the last year.
Of those, 31 have been public disorder and most have happened at night.
And Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents' Association says people in nearby homes have complained of noise from the bar disturbing them in the early hours.
Bar Med currently stays open until 1.30am. But bosses want to extend its opening hours until 3am on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Customers would be able to enter until 2.30am.
Borough council officers have recommended councillors refuse the plans when they meet next week, on the grounds the changes would mean residents were disturbed when they "could reasonably be expected to be asleep".
Their report says: "To allow an extension of hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 3am will remove the existing staggered hours between two large adjacent venues, Bar Med and Flares.
"This would increase the large number of people emerging onto the street at the same time, and hence increase the likelihood of noise, disturbance and public order incidents." Popular stories:
